My thoughts ahead of tomorrow’s Tony Awards nominations, plus theatre reviews for The Lost Boys, Cats: The Jellicle Ball, Mexodus, and more…
OHMYGOD HEY!
Welcome back to my weekly collation of the various reviews, opinion pieces and theatre news updates I’ve shared across multiple social media platforms.
Well, I’m finally back from another marathon theatre trip to New York, where at final count I saw (and, for the most part, enjoyed) 23 performances of largely newly opened Broadway plays and musicals. The timing is fortuitous and deliberate as it affords me some last minute perspective on the imminent announcement of this year’s Tony Award nominations.
What I already knew was that this season was an uneven one, and that thanks to last year’s extraordinary success (and ongoing runs), the offerings this time around are more sparse. This is balanced, though, as what we lack in original scores for example, we make up for in Featured Actresses in plays (a bloodbath category I will be watching through my hands). Some British originated shows stand to be recognised, such as Giant, Two Strangers (Carry a Cake across New York), Every Brilliant Thing, Punch, The Fear of 13 and Oedipus, though they will face competition from the all American likes of Ragtime, The Balusters, Becky Shaw, Proof, Schmigadoon!, and more. Frankly I’ll be contented as long as Cats: The Jellicle Ball earns more nominations than Chess.
Of course, the looming Tony Awards also marks a chapter of announcements for the forthcoming Broadway season (so that its stars can appear as presenters and plug their upcoming productions), hence why suspicious blue stars appeared on the streets of Manhattan hours before Evita confirmed its Broadway transfer.

The Spring 2026 Broadway Vlog Part 1 – featuring Schmigadoon!, Beaches, Bigfoot!, 1776, Six, and more!
It’s been a few months since my stagey fiancé Aeron James and I last visited New York, so this month we headed back stateside to catch as many of the Spring Broadway openings as possible.
In the first part of a three part vlog series, join us vicariously to see Schmigadoon!, Beaches, and Six on Broadway as well as Bigfoot!, 11 to Midnight and No Singing in the Navy off-Broadway, and 1776 at the Paper Mill Playhouse.
As always, check out what we experienced from theatre merchandise to late night bar snacks, and stay tuned for plenty of reviews and the next vlog instalment!
What’s coming up this week?
Since getting back from New York, I’ve wasted predictably little time before getting back to the theatre (about 12 hours specifically), and unbelievably I’ll be heading off later this week on another trip to the Lake District for the press night performance of Fourteen Again at the Victoria Wood Theatre!
Meanwhile, stay tuned for my live reaction to the Tony Award nominations this Tuesday and a couple more reviews from Broadway and further instalments of the vlog.
Until next week, I hope that everyone is staying safe and that you have a stagey… week! – Mickey-Jo
