Theatregoing all over the world – from Madrid to New York

My first experience of seeing theatre in Spain, theatregoing resolutions for the year, and a review of Ulysses in New York.

OHMYGOD HEY!

Welcome back to my weekly collation of the various reviews, opinion pieces and theatre news updates I’ve shared across multiple social media platforms.

The slow month of January invited travel, and a last minute trip to Madrid was followed very shortly by a wintry return to Manhattan, where I spoke on a panel at BroadwayCon about the shifting landscape of theatre criticism. The full panel was filmed and will be shared online by And That’s Showbiz.

While Broadway offered few surprises (aside from more snow than I’ve seen in my life), Spanish theatregoing left us a little stunned, not least of all because we hadn’t realised how extensive Madrid’s theatre district was!

From non replica productions of Wicked and The Book of Mormon to an ‘even-more-immersive’ Cabaret, and 5pm / 9pm showtimes, we were kept on our toes as we threw ourselves into a back to back weekend of Spanish theatre.

The scarce time I’ve spent at home has meant fewer videos shared than usual, but with almost a dozen shows from three countries to discuss, the floodgates will imminently be opening.

Our 2025 theatre resolutions! What we want to see, do, and create this year…

As January draws to a close, my stagey fiancé @AeronJames and I are once more talking through our theatrical resolutions for the coming year.

By taking a look at the goals we set this time last year, we are refocusing our priorities for theatregoing, content creation and travel.

These include theatres we’d like to visit, countries we’re eager to return to and a handful more theatre themed goals for 2026.

Why shouldn’t Dylan Mulvaney be in SIX? The honest truth behind the Broadway casting backlash…

It was recently announced that actor and social media personality, Dylan Mulvaney, would join the Broadway cast of SIX the Musical alongside other new cast members including Abigail Barlow and returning members of the original Broadway company.

In an increasingly dangerous climate for the trans community, this news has unearthed criticism, with the show’s X account becoming temporarily private in order to limit what the producers have characterised as bullying.

In a theatre news recap, I’m sharing my thoughts on the history of both the show, and Mulvaney as a performer, in order to illustrate why this casting is not only valid, but hugely exciting.

A theatre trip to Madrid!

Earlier this month, my fiancé @AeronJames and I flew to Madrid, Spain to see 4 of our favourite musicals in Spanish.

During our trip we saw performances of Les MisérablesWickedThe Book of Mormon, and Cabaret, and made a new friend in the Spanish theatre journalist, Juan María Villagrán.

Check out what we saw and where we went in this theatregoing travel vlog!

What’s coming up this week?

As I type this, I’m sat on a transatlantic flight readying to take off in spite of a recent blizzard which will return me to the UK from a whirlwind Broadway weekend.

Expect reviews of Madrid’s musicals, New York’s plays and London’s off-West End offerings as well as my thoughts on the news that cultural tv phenomenon The Traitors is to be unexpectedly adapted for the stage.

Until next week, I hope that everyone is staying safe and that you have a stagey… week! – Mickey-Jo
